What Are The Best Window Treatments For Patio Doors

As you know, window treatment options can be extensive and sometimes overwhelming. Most homeowners often ask “Should I use the same window covering throughout my house?” Generally speaking, the answer is “not necessarily.” The most important thing is that the window treatments do the job you want them to do and that they go with the decor in the room. That can be an easy decision for a bathroom that needs privacy or a bedroom that needs room darkening. But what about the area around the doors that lead out to your patio or screened-in porch? What are the best window treatments for patio doors? That kind of depends on the type of door you have and what is on the other side.

Sliding Glass Doors

Because sliding glass doors are typically wider than French Doors or single-entry doors, the window treatments used here must be able to cover those wider spans as well. Window treatments cannot be attached to a sliding glass door and must be mounted on the trim around the door or on the wall above the slider.

Until as recently as the mid-90s, the only option for a slider was usually vertical blinds or curtains. Now you have additional choices, such as vertical cellular shades, panel track shades and bi-fold / bypass shutter panels.

French Doors

French doors are usually a pair of side-by-side entry doors that can swing into a room, or out to an adjacent patio. Sometimes, there will be a single functional door with a stationary false door that looks similar to the functional door area.

Window treatments, such as horizontal blinds or roller shades, can be attached directly to these doors or you can select products similar to those used for a sliding glass door that attach to the wall or trim above the door. Do not install on the trim if the doors swing into the room as the window treatment may interfere with the operation of the door. Be aware of the door handles as well. These can also become an obstruction to the operation of the window coverings. In some cases, you may need a door handle extension or special cutouts on your window treatment.

Uncovered Patio

If you have an uncovered patio (and not a screened-in porch) and your goal is to block the sun and heat from entering your home, another option is to mount an exterior screen shade on the outside of the home. These can easily be motorized and allow you to raise and lower the shade while inside the home. One word of warning, these shades are not designed to be “weather shields” and should be raised in the event of wind, rain, snow, etc.
