Should I Use The Same Window Covering Throughout My House?

“Should I use the same window covering throughout my house?” is one of the most common questions that we receive.

The short answer is no. At least that seems to be the “common wisdom.” Of course, you know what they say, “everything old is new again.”

Many years ago, it was a standard practice to use the same window treatment on every window. So if you had plantation shutters downstairs in the living room, then you would have plantation shutters upstairs in the bedrooms.

Over time, the “standards” changed and the general consensus became making sure that all of the window treatments on the “streetside” of the home were the same.

Now the “rules” are a lot more flexible and once you know what kind of window treatments to buy, you can pick and choose the type of window treatment that you want (based on how you are going to use the room).

That being said, some people prefer to use the same window covering throughout their home to create a consistent look and that’s totally fine but it’s not necessary. You probably would not use the same draperies in the dining room that you would use in the master bedroom, so you do not have to use the same shades in each room either.

The most important thing is that the window treatments do the job you want them to do and that they go with the decor in the room. Don’t forget, there are only 3 reasons to buy window treatments: privacy, heat control, or light control.

Will the trend change again in the future? I suppose that is anyone’s guess.
